After 25+ years in recruiting, I’ve heard every kind of interview answer imaginable. But there is one mistake almost every job seeker makes… and it costs people great opportunities every single day.
The mistake?
They talk in circles instead of giving a clear answer.
When a hiring manager asks questions like:
- “Tell me about a challenge you faced.”
- “Why should we hire you?”
- “What makes you a good fit for this role?”
Most people ramble. They either share too much detail, not enough, or drift off-topic. The interviewer finishes the answer thinking, “I still don’t know if this person can do the job.”
The 30-Second Fix: Use the STAR Method
To keep your answers clear and confident, use the STAR method:
- S – Situation: What was going on?
- T – Task: What were you responsible for?
- A – Action: What did you actually do?
- R – Result: What happened because of your actions?
Example:
“At my last job, production was falling behind and we were missing orders (Situation). I was assigned to identify the bottleneck and improve output (Task). I reorganized the workflow, adjusted machine schedules, and retrained two operators (Action). We increased weekly output by 18% in 30 days (Result).”
This kind of answer is short, clear, and impressive — and it takes about 30 seconds.
Practice Before the Interview, Not During It
Most candidates try to “wing it” and think they’ll sound more natural. In reality, they usually sound unprepared. Practicing just a few STAR stories can completely change how confident you feel.
