5 Reasons You’re Not Getting Interviews (And How to Fix It This Week)

If you’re sending out application after application and hearing nothing back, you’re not alone. As a recruiter who’s seen thousands of resumes across every industry, I can tell you this: most candidates are closer to interviews than they think. They just need a few simple fixes.

Here are the five biggest reasons you may not be getting interviews — and how to turn things around this week.

1. Your resume doesn’t match the job you’re applying for

Most companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS). If your resume doesn’t contain the right job title and keywords, it may never even reach a human.

Fix: Pull keywords directly from the job posting — especially skills, software, certifications, and job titles. Make sure your resume clearly matches the role.

2. Your resume lists responsibilities, not results

Recruiters aren’t just looking for what you were “responsible for.” They want to see the impact you had.

Instead of saying: “Responsible for maintaining equipment,” try something like:

“Reduced machine downtime by 23% through preventive maintenance and better scheduling.”

3. You’re applying to too few jobs

Applying to two or three jobs a week is usually not enough in today’s market.

Aim for:

  • 10–15 targeted applications per week
  • 1–2 intentional follow-ups with employers or recruiters
  • At least 1 conversation with a recruiter or hiring manager

4. You’re under-selling yourself in interviews

Even when candidates get interviews, many lose the opportunity because they don’t prepare clear, confident answers. They “wing it” and end up talking in circles.

This is exactly why I built our AI Interview Assistant Tool — it gives personalized questions and strong sample answers based on your exact job title.

5. You’re not showing enthusiasm

Companies want skill and energy. Even a simple line like, “I’m genuinely excited about this position,” goes a long way. Hiring managers remember people who sound interested in the work.
